The challenge

Capital One’s growth strategy involved expanding into more premium products and higher-end targets, a shift from its traditionally subprime business. Breaking into the small-business credit card category would take a stellar product concept to raise the brand and compete with the likes of Amex, which launched Small Business Saturday the year before.

Our approach

Research and analysis showed 90% of small businesses failing in the first 3 years, driven mainly by poor forecasting and planning, undercapitalization, and lack of awareness of available tools. Throughout the process, we focused on fully leveraging Capital One’s business know-how, data, and business analytics prowess into a new card proposition that would help specifically small business owners succeed and give them a bigger voice.

Momentum continues to grow around the portfolio of Spark cards, and they are well regarded for simple, generous rewards, low fees and lots of perks designed to make corporate success easier to achieve, earning it a current 5.0 rating from NerdWallet.
